Ah food… Wonderful, delicious, wholesome food. How we love you. But how, exactly, should we eat you?
Well, it’s a new year and everyone is talking about new diet trends, so we figured we’d just go ahead and jump right in on the conversation. We talk a lot about food around here (go figure!) and the following trends have been high on our radar lately either because some of our team are trying them out or because it seems that everyone else around us is.
Read on to find out more about Keto, Intermittent Fasting, Grain-Free, and Plant-Based diets, and discover which delicious Kashi products fit into each one.
- A plant-based diet refers to one that consists primarily (or exclusively) of plant-based foods. That means little-to-no animal products either meat or dairy.
- Whether you choose this approach because of ethical, health, or environmental reasons, there is one thing we can all agree on: eating more (and a wider diversity of) plant-based foods can only be a good thing for your health and our planet.

Eat in an eight hour time window and fast for the other 16? We can do that!
- Intermittent Fasting (or IF) is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of eating and periods of fasting.
- There are several different approaches to it, with the most common being a 24 hour fast a couple of times a week, or fasting for 16 hours in a 24 hour period and only eating in the remaining eight hour window.
- IF may have a positive impact on weight loss, cognitive function, cholesterol levels and so much more. According to this article from Harvard Health Publishing, "Many clinical data right now show intermittent fasting has multiple benefits, not only for weight loss, but also for health and longevity."
- If you’re attempting the timed eating window each day, evidence points to an earlier eating window being more beneficial than a later one. In fact, “Just changing the timing of meals, by eating earlier in the day and extending the overnight fast, significantly benefited metabolism even in people who didn’t lose a single pound,” according to this article. That works great for us, because, believe it or not, we happen to be big breakfast fans around here!
A great go-to for “breaking your fast” on busy work mornings are the Kashi GO Protein Waffles topped with berries and bananas. With 13g of protein, they keep energy levels high and pop straight in the toaster for an easy breakfast!
The company that was known as “7 whole grains on a mission” talking about grain free? That’s right! We are big fans of whole grains, but now we’re in our 20s we understand that some people prefer grain free. We’re good with that!
- The Paleo trend brought the concept of grain free eating into the spotlight, and it continued to be a popular eating trend in 2020 for people hoping to reduce inflammation in the body or resolve digestive issues.
- Not to be confused with a gluten-free diet (gluten is the protein found in wheat and wheat-based products) grain free means eliminating all grains, including those that don’t contain gluten such as amaranth, quinoa, and rice
- Unlike the paleo diet, people following grain-free diets can still consume dairy and starchy vegetables (amongst other foods) so although there are similarities, the two diets are not the same thing.
When you follow a grain-free diet, it can be a little tougher to find on-the-go snacks (most will contain at least some kind of grain, even if they’re gluten free.) Ketoooooooo! Trends don’t get much hotter than the keto diet trend, and from carb-cutting celebrities to your colleagues, people everywhere are giving the keto diet a try.
- At its simplest, the keto diet is a very low-carb, high-fat diet..
- By drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat, your body goes into a metabolic state called ketosis, which is said to make your body more efficient at burning fat for energy.
- The keto diet is probably one of the most time-consuming in terms of establishing what you can and cannot eat at each meal.
As you’ve probably guessed we REALLY love our cereal over here, but you’d be forgiven for thinking your favorite breakfast food is off-limits when following a keto diet.
