Mixin’ It Up

Candice Kumai pours herself a freshly made vegan smoothie with Kashi’s new plant-powered protein powders.

Nobody says you have to actually eat your protein. So when it comes to getting the energy our bodies need, we’re big fans of heading straight toward our blenders. Because we think the perfect way to mix things up is to start by blending them.

When we need a few smoothie tips, we look to our good friend and author of the very popular book “Clean Green Drinks,” Candice Kumai. Expertly whipping up clean green smoothies is kind of her thing. And gathering a little inspiration is kind of ours. No wonder we always seem to get along so well! The fact that she’s also from San Diego sure doesn’t hurt, either.

They are so simple and clean
to whip up post-workout!

Candice is a Bar Method workout fanatic and yogi, and she loves that smoothies can help her fuel that passion. “They are so simple and clean to whip up post-workout! All you need is a quality blender, fresh ingredients, a clean protein powder and the knowledge to whip up a tasty drink.”

Speaking of knowledge, she has lots of that to lend, too. “Always use fresh, quality ingredients, like kale, spinach, avocado, frozen banana, plus a high-quality protein powder. Add ice to add thickness without any excess sugar. Keep your smoothies low-sugar and low-calorie when possible.”

Candice’s other fave ingredients? Pumpkin purée, almond butter, flax seed and even pitaya. After all, she says, “try to keep your smoothies exciting and fresh — in-style, if you will.”

Want a couple more ways to up your smoothie game? Try these yummy recipes Candice created for us. Bottoms up!
